No matter what kind of business you have, your website’s first impression must have a positive impact on visitors. Overall, it should have a clean, professional, and updated appearance. These are all things you probably know by now! So in this blog post, we’re going to take a closer look at website design specifically for a product-based business. Whether you’re selling light fixtures, jewelry, or floral arrangements―here are a few key things your website needs in order to be effective:
- Great photos. The most important (and most obvious) is a focus on the products themselves. People can’t touch the products through the screen, so the next best thing is showing them high-quality photos along with in-use shots. Including photos of people (especially those that look like your target audience) enjoying the product can be very impactful. And while pictures do speak a thousand words, it’s still helpful to provide detailed item descriptions including size, color, weight, and any other necessary specifications.
- Clear contact information. Here’s another one that seems pretty obvious, yet it’s surprising how many overlook it. Your address, hours of operation, phone number, and email address must be clearly visible on your website! If you have a storefront, consider showing a picture of it so people know what to look for. Even with a strictly e-commerce retailer, people want to know where the products are coming from (before just handing their money over to some obscure business in Nowheresville). Don’t forget links to your social media profiles, too!
- E-commerce. While this isn’t a requirement, it can certainly help boost existing sales for brick-and-mortar stores. Plus, it opens up a whole new world of profit potential outside your city limits. (With that said, you also have to be prepared to take on the logistics.) - Social proof. People are influenced by what other people think and do―this includes the products they buy. Have you ever bought anything on Amazon or another major online retailer? If you usually look for those little yellow stars or read through the reviews before completing your purchase, you’re not alone. Displaying product reviews on your website will help give people more confidence in buying from you. (This is assuming the reviews are positive, which hopefully they are!) There are several rating & review plugins for websites designed in WordPress, which is our preferred CMS.
- A personalized experience. Online personalization is big right now, but it’s not limited to the big-box retailers. There are relatively simple ways that small and medium businesses can create a more dynamic user experience on their product-based websites. Why is this so important? Okay, there’s actually one final tip that we can’t leave out, because it relates to any business: Start a blog, if you don’t already have one! It’s easy to incorporate into your existing website design, and it builds the number of site pages which helps boost your SEO ranking.
