Typography Shines in Web Design

Typography in web design

There’s a lot to look forward to in website design this year―one of those being the prominence of bold and beautiful typography. Typography and branding are becoming more closely connected than ever―just think of how many major company logos you can recognize based on the typeface alone!
Instagram, Pinterest, and eBay are just a few that come to our minds.

Creative type treatments have long since been used in graphic design for print marketing materials. But up until the past couple of years, digital design hasn’t been as much of a platform for showcasing such typography. The use of fancy fonts was limited by low-resolution displays which didn’t do justice to intricate serif typefaces. (Quick refresher: a serif is a small decorative flourish on the end of the strokes that make up letters and symbols.)

Thankfully, technology continues to evolve! Now that our digital devices come equipped with such high-resolution displays―and higher processing speeds, for that matter―they can handle more dynamic typography. On top of that, web browsers have also seen improvements including the overall accessibility of more web fonts.

So, what exactly does all this mean for typography in web design?

  • Creative type treatments and layouts that lend personality to logos, headlines, and more
  • More emphasis on typography as a focal point in minimalist designs, to compensate for fewer page elements
  • Infographics that include more visually interesting type treatments
  • More typefaces that have the appearance of being hand-drawn (which complements the trend of hand-drawn illustrations)
  • Italics, all caps, and serif fonts becoming more common
  • Above all, legibility is still important!

Needless to say, we’re pretty excited about what the future holds for typography and website design.
